"AI skills" show up in more and more freelance job posts every month. That's an opportunity, but it's also crowded with people promising magic. Here's a realistic starter path from "I know a bit about AI" to "someone paid me for it."

Want the same path as a short course? Open AI Earn on Google Play — that listing is the official app page.

A starter path. Skip a step and the next one usually stalls.

Step 1: get genuinely good at one thing

Generalists struggle. Pick a narrow, useful skill and get genuinely competent: writing product descriptions, setting up simple chatbots, editing AI drafts into polished copy, creating social graphics, or building prompt libraries for a niche. Depth sells; "I do everything AI" doesn't.

Step 2: build two or three samples

Clients want proof, not promises. Before chasing paid work, make a few strong examples — even unpaid, even invented briefs. A small portfolio of "here's what I can do" beats a long list of claims. Quality over quantity.

Step 3: choose where to find clients

  • Freelance platforms — competitive but high volume; good for first gigs and reviews.
  • Your existing network — small businesses you know often need exactly this help.
  • Niche communities — places where your target clients already hang out.

Step 4: price for beginners, then raise

Your first few jobs are partly about building reviews and confidence. Price reasonably to win them, deliver well, then raise your rates as your portfolio and testimonials grow. Don't work for free forever, but don't expect premium rates on day one either.

Reputation compounds. Three happy clients who refer you are worth more than thirty cold applications.

Step 5: keep your skills current

AI moves fast. Part of the value you offer is staying up to date so your clients don't have to. Follow developments, keep experimenting with new tools on our leaderboard, and your edge stays sharp.
