Here's a pleasant surprise: if you use Gmail, YouTube, or an Android phone, you already have everything you need to use Google's AI, Gemini. There's no separate sign-up. Let me show you how to open it and what it's actually good at.

Want the same path as a short course? Open AI Earn on Google Play — that listing is the official app page.

The fastest way in

On any browser, go to gemini.google.com and make sure you're signed in to your Google account (top-right corner). That's it — you're looking at Gemini. If you have multiple Google accounts, double-check you're using the one you want.

On your phone

On many Android phones the Gemini app is already installed, or you can get it from the Play Store. On iPhone, search the App Store for the official Google Gemini app (check the developer is Google LLC). Sign in with your Google account and you're ready.

What Gemini is especially good at

All the big assistants overlap, but Gemini has a few natural strengths worth knowing:

  • It lives near your Google life. It plays nicely with Gmail, Docs and Drive, which is handy if that's where your work already happens.
  • Long documents. It's comfortable working with big chunks of text, so it's good for summarizing or asking questions about long material.
  • Up-to-date answers. Because it's Google, it's reasonably good at pulling in current information — though you should still verify, as we explain in how to fact-check AI.

Free vs paid

The free version covers most everyday needs. Google offers a paid tier with a more capable model and extra integration, but as with every tool on our AI leaderboard, start free and only upgrade once you've hit a real limit. There's a fuller discussion in free vs paid AI tools.

Three prompts to start with

  • "Summarize this article in five bullet points: [paste text]."
  • "Plan a simple weekly meal prep for one person on a small budget."
  • "Draft a polite email asking my landlord to fix a leaking tap."

If you're choosing between assistants

Honestly? For a beginner, you can't go wrong with Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude — they're more similar than different. If you're torn, our side-by-side comparison lays out the small differences that might tip your decision. The best one is simply the one you'll actually open and use.
